With the NESCAC Championships cruising closer, the women’s swimming and diving team appears to be splashing ahead at the right speed. The ladies held on to their perfect record at MIT this past Saturday, improving to 7-0 overall.

The men’s team, however, suffered a close defeat at MIT. Losing by only six points, the Jeffs still maintain a solid record of 5-2. Perhaps the upcoming meet at Springfield College will provide a chance to bring the Jeffs up to speed once more.

Women

For her performance at Union College, Kendra Stern ’11 earned SwimmingWorldMagazine.com’s national swimmer of the week honors. Stern then continued her outstanding rookie season by winning the 50- and 1,000-yard freestyles at MIT.

Senior captain Brittany Sasser also showcased her talent and took first place in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke. Meaghan Stern ’09, had a stellar meet, earning wins in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles. Lisa Pritchard ’08 followed suit in winning the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, while first-years Brooke Bennett and Andrea Jensen placed first in the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard breaststroke, respectively.

Men

Although the men had a disappointing loss against MIT, the Jeffs were still a force to contend with in the water. There was no shortage of first place finishes for the men’s swimming and diving team.

Christian Witzke ’09 had a tight race for the 200-yard freestyle but kept the lead, taking first place by only 0.04 seconds. Ryan Colby ’11 finished first in the 200-yard butterfly and added depth to the Jeffs’ freestyle line-up. Sophomore Tad Homchick also won the 50-yard freestyle. Kai Robinson ’09, in the meanwhile, continued his stellar performance in diving and won both the one- and three-meter events. Junior Mike Waskom pulled through and took a victory in the 200-yard backstroke as well. Nevertheless, Amherst’s strong performance at the meet was not quite enough to stop MIT from slipping past the Jeffs.
