Surf & Turf: Indoor Track

Both the women’s and men’s teams found themselves on equal footing this past Saturday at the second Tufts Invitational. The men took seventh place out of 10 teams, and the women placed seventh out of the 14 teams competing in the meet.

With the Div. III New England Championships quickly approaching at the end of February, the Jeffs must continue the momentum of the last few meets into the upcoming weeks.

Women

Zandra Walton ’09 led the women’s team with her second-place finish in the 3,000-meter run. First-year Hallie Schwab crossed the finish line just seconds after Walton to take third place. Although Carly Levenson ’09 and Mary Doris Reggie ’10 did not qualify for the top heat of the 600-meter run, they were still stiff competitors in their own heat. Levenson took third place with a time of 1:39.46, with Reggie close at her heels to finish fourth overall.

Susan Wasserman ’11 has stayed consistent in her strong rookie performances and took fourth place in the 800-meter run. Fellow first-year Zoe Pagonis placed 11th in the 800, while senior Lauren Benson ran her personal best of the season at 2:41.20.

Men

The men had a string of strong performances throughout the meet. Senior captain Basile Beaty picked up the Jeffs’ only win of the day in the 600-meter run. In addition, first-year Peter Harrison made an impressive showing by finishing third in the 1,000-meter run. Mike Harbus ’08 led two other teammates with a fourth place finish in the 3,000-meter run, which turned out to be a heated race. Sophomore Jimmy Swanson was the only Jeff in the top heat of the mile, finishing with a solid fifth place. Both rookie Florian Reichert and Eric Holaday ’10 had their indoor track debuts of the winter season and made their marks on the long-distance runs.
