At the start of the last meet of the regular season, the swimming and diving team honored its 13 graduating seniors. This past Saturday at Sprinfield College, the women defended their record to stay at an undefeated 8-0 for the season. The men also picked up a victory, ending with a solid 6-2 overall record.

Women

Although they faced some stiff competition from Springfield, the Amherst women relied on the talent and depth of their team to defeat them. First-year Kendra Stern continued her spectacular rookie season with two individual victories. Stern won the 50-yard freestyle, in addition to breaking a pool and college record with her win in the 500-yard freestyle. Meaghan Stern ’10, likewise a swimming star, won the 100- and 200-yard freestyles.

Meggie Meisinger, another talented first-year, took first in both the one- and three-meter diving events as well. Senior captain Brittany Sasser ended her final regular season meet with a first place in the 200-yard backstroke.

Men

The men might have felt overshadowed by the successes of the women’s swimming and diving team for the past few meets, but at Springfield, they earned a convincing victory to end the regular season with an impressive 6-3 overall record.

First-year Ryan Colby handily won the 1,000-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly. In addition, Christian Witzke ’09 placed first in the 50- and 500-yard freestyles.

Senior Connor Boyd, along with fellow diver Kai Robinson ’09, won the one- and three-meter diving events. The Amherst men had a spectacular final meet, eventually winning nine individual events. The 400-yard freestyle relay team’s victory was a fitting event to conclude the day. Alex Fraser ’11, senior captain Andrew Maslan, Tad Homchick ’10 and Witzke established a new pool record with a time of 3:09.52.
