Upcoming Weekend
By Sarah Gelles, Managing Sports Editor
This weekend, four Amherst teams—women’s basketball, women’s ice hockey, men’s ice hockey and men’s basketball—all will host NESCAC Tournament games (quarterfinals or semifinals). Saturday’s schedule is packed, so here’s a rundown:

Women’s Basketball: 12 p.m.

After dominating in last weekend’s quarterfinals game against Colby College en route to a 30-point victory, the Jeffs remain in possession of the home court advantage that comes with having the top seed in the NESCAC. As the top four seeds in the league all advanced to the semifinals, Amherst will play host to fourth-seeded Bowdoin College in the semifinals on Saturday. The Jeffs will be led by senior tri-captain Stefanie Reiff, who collected 24 points in 27 minutes against the Mules last Saturday.

Women’s Ice Hockey: 1 p.m.

After a weekend home-and-home sweep of Connecticut College, the Jeffs finished the regular season in possession of second place in the conference. On Saturday, Amherst will host seventh-seeded Bowdoin College at Orr Rink in the quarterfinals. Amherst has outscored the Polar Bears 6-0 this season; the Jeffs won 2-0 in the first game of the season, and the teams’ last match-up, at Amherst on Jan. 26, ended in a 4-0 Amherst victory.

Men’s Ice Hockey: 4 p.m.

As the fourth seed in the NESCAC, the Jeffs have earned the right to host a first-round game in the upcoming tournament. Amherst will play fifth-seeded Connecticut College, a team the Jeffs have outscored 9-4 in two victories this season. During the most recent win, a 5-3 victory on Feb. 2, five different Amherst players scored and Andrew Stevenson ’10 and Joel Covelli ’09 racked up two assists apiece.

Men’s Basketball: 6 p.m.

Despite winning the Div. III National Championship last year, the Jeffs failed to claim the NESCAC title, losing a heartbreaker to Williams College in the finals, 70-69. This season, the team hopes things will be different. After a commanding 17-point victory over Colby College last Saturday in a first-round game, the Jeffs will host fourth-seeded Bowdoin College in LeFrak Gymnasium on Saturday in the semifinals. Though Amherst beat the Polar Bears earlier this month, the six-point victory was one of the season’s tighter games.
