Friends of Jaclyn Takes Off at Amherst
Amherst’s sports teams don’t want to just be great athletes. They want to be great people as well, which is why they have dedicated themselves to community service through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. Friends of Jaclyn is a non-profit organization that strives to raise awareness of pediatric brain tumor patients by linking athletic teams with recovering children. The men’s soccer team introduced the organization to the campus last year when nine-year-old Michael Lanosa became their new biggest fan. Lanosa’s impact on the team was seen immediately, and other Amherst teams were quick to follow suit. This year, Amherst’s football, field hockey, men’s soccer and men’s lacrosse will join more than 20 other collegiate teams already involved with Friends of Jaclyn. To celebrate and support the foundation, Amherst will team up with UMass, UConn and Mt. Holyoke College to host the inaugural Friends of Jaclyn 5K Walk/Run Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. on the Amherst campus. Participants have the option of either running a 5K race or walking a one-mile circuit. The event will commence with a rally beginning at 10 a.m. in Alumni Gymnasium, featuring speeches by Friends of Jaclyn founder Denis Murphy and other influential members.
