By Morgan Toy '11, Sports Editor
En route to the Jeffs’ 5-2 championship victory over Middlebury, sophomore goaltender Jonathan La Rose posted a shutout win over Trinity in the semifinals, earning him NESCAC Player of the Week Honors. La Rose had 44 saves in the Trinity victory.

La Rose stands at the top of the national scene as well. La Rose and teammate, sophomore Cole Anderson, have flip-flopped all year in the national rankings for goals-against-average and save percentage. Currently, La Rose is the national leaders in goals-against-average with 1.42 and second to Anderson in save percentage with .953.

Junior goaltender Krystyn Elek was chosen as a 2009 NESCAC Co-Player of the Year for her work backstopping the women’s hockey team to a perfect 16-0-0 league record. Elek is the first Amherst player to receive Player of the Year honors.

Her honor is the third consecutive year on the All-NESCAC team. Elek leads the NESCAC in both goals-against-average and save percentage. Nationally she is third in save percentage and sixth in standings for overall goaltending leaders. With NCAA play beginning this weekend, Elek will be vital to the team’s national championship quest.
