Men’s senior captain Kevin Cecala said the teams “went into the match expecting Vassar to be a weaker opponent than we usually face, but we were still pleased with how everyone played and controlled their matches.”
Playing in the number one spots for the Lord Jeffs were sophomore Charles Loesch-Quintin for the men’s side and senior Hayley Milbourn for the women’s side. Loesch-Quintin won his match 11-8, 11-7, 11-9. Milbourn had an even more decisive victory, beating her opponent 11-1, 11-2, 11-0.
Four first-years kicked off their collegiate careers in the lineup against Vassar, and all four won their debut matches. Evelyn Kramer ’14 and Lena Rice ’14 played in the fifth and eighth spots, and both won their matches by large margins. Kramer won 11-4, 11-4, 11-2 while Rice beat her opponent 11-1, 11-3, 11-4.
On the men’s side, David Kerr ’14 and Rodrigo Miranda ’14 played at numbers three and eight, respectively. Kerr won his match 11-1, 11-3, 11-3 and Miranda took his match 11-7, 11-8, 11-2.
Cecala was proud that “everyone was able to keep their composure and put away their opponents without much drama. It is good that everyone can go into our next match with the confidence of a decisive win under their belt.”
The women’s team faces off against Smith tonight at 7 p.m. The men’s and women’s squads will then return to action on Saturday afternoon, travelling to Cambridge to compete against Northeastern University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at MIT’s campus.
“I think we will continue to perform well in the middle of the line-up throughout the season, especially with the additions of last year’s No. 3 and 4 [junior Steve Severson] and [senior Andrew Kriete] returning second semester,” Cecala said. “Since only one starter graduated last year, we have a very deep team, which will help us in some of our more challenging matches later in the season.”
