Surf n' Turf: Indoor Track

The track teams both had a successful weekend, with the women’s squad winning the Tartan Invitational at Smith College and the men coming in second place on Saturday.

Women

The Jeffs racked up 214 total points to run away with the victory over the 11-team field, as the next highest total was 178. Naomi Bates ’14 sparked the Jeffs by earning 41 points of her own, including victories in the triple jump and long jump with results of 10.48 meters and 5.14 meters, respectively. Bates also showcased her versatility, finishing second in the 55-meter hurdles with a 9.14 seconds result and third in the 200 meter dash with a mark of 27.46 seconds.

Kristen Moulton ’13 won the 5,000-meter race with a clocking of 18:41, racking up 30 points for Amherst. The Jeffs also swept the first three places in the 1,000 meter run, with Melissa Sullivan ’12 coming in first with a time of 3:01.

In the throwing events, Jordan Roehl ’12 came second in the weight throw with a distance of 14.16 meters and third in the shot put (10.72 meters).

Men

While the men came in second, they picked up a solid score of 215 points. The total surpassed every team in the eight squad field other than Worcester Polytechnic Institute, which compiled a total of 261.5 points. John McGrail ’11 led the way in the 5,000 meter run with a first place finish of 14:52, and Andrew Reed ’12 won the 400 meter dash in 50.71 seconds.

The Jeffs won six other events, and boasted the top two finishers in the 800, 1,000, and 3,000 meter races. Will Yochum ’11 triumphed in the 800, Ben Scheetz ’12 dominated the 1,000 and Jack Seaver ’11 crossed the line first in the 3,000. The other two victories came in the relays, as Amherst won the 4x400 and 4x800 with times of 3:25 and 7:52, respectively.

Chris Eaton ’11 was the Jeffs’ top performer in the field events, finishing second in the weight throw with a toss of 16.19 meters.

Both teams travel to Boston University for the Valentine Invitational this weekend.
